Timothy Goforth is a New Mexico Tech senior who is
majoring in both general studies and physics.
He plans to eventually combine his education with his extensive experience
as a certified diving instructor to pursue a specialized career which will
focus on training for engineers and technicians on the various aspects of
working in underwater environments.
The South Carolina Native transferred to New Mexico Tech after receiving an
associate’s degree in anthropology from Bakersfield Junior College in
California. Before he actually enrolled at Tech, Goforth worked as a manager
of an organic chicken farm in Socorro, hoping to make enough money to get
back in school.
Goforth did save enough money to begin attending classes, but he soon
experienced academic difficulties his first semester at New Mexico Tech,
which were further compounded with problems in his personal life.
The Tech Financial Aid Office was required to take a “wait and see” approach
to helping Goforth’s financial requirements to attend college because of his
academic status. But nevertheless, staff members suggested that he approach
Tech President Daniel López about the possibility of being considered for
funds through the President’s Tuitions Assistance Fund.
He was soon elated to find out that he had been awarded financial assistance
through the program for the Spring Semester 2000 at New Mexico Tech.
“Getting that money put me back in the swing of things,” Goforth says. “I
ended up finishing the semester with a 3.0 G.P.A., which made me eligible
for more conventional financial aid programs…It definitely gave me the
opportunity which I really needed.
“I was thankful I got it when I did,” Goforth adds. “More than anything, the
financial assistance really alleviated me from having to work and allowed me
to dedicate myself entirely to my studies. As a result, I got my G.P.A. up,
and I got my standing up, academically speaking.” |
