Heating and cooling seasons - By October 15th of each
year, the utility's crews try to have all heating equipment filters changed and all pumps and air handlers greased. Most, if not all of the swamp coolers on campus, have been turned off, and maintenance on them for the next cooling season begins.
Most of the newer buildings at New Mexico Tech have heating and cooling systems active year-round. The systems work in unison to maintain a constant temperature throughout the building. The temperatures are managed by the use of pneumatic controls.
Heat for most of the main campus is provided by one main hot water loop system. Boilers strategically placed around campus heat the water in the loop. Each building draws hot water from the loop by means of a circulating pump located in each buildings mechanical room. We also have a loop system for cooling most of our newer buildings.
