Garage & Automotive Services

Facilities Management operates a full-service garage for all university vehicles and heavy equipment. A supervisor with over 30 years experience who oversees a crew of four mechanics with an average of 18 years experience each manages the Garage. Work orders are prioritized on a daily basis, and range from a complete engine teardown to performing preventative maintenance. Crews work exclusively on all diesel equipment.

Michael D Jones - Garage Supervisor

Michael D Jones
Garage Supervisor

The Garage Supervisor makes personnel assignments and ensures that the requisite supplies and parts are available for each project, as well as adequate time for completion.

The Supervisor keeps track of time and expenses related to each project, makes sure that safety procedures are followed, and that complaints are handled immediately.

Other duties include:

  • Meeting with sales agents
  • Serving as an advisor on mechanical problems
  • Researching designated projects
  • Meeting regularly with the Facilities Management Director to discuss a project and formulate plans with the garage mechanics to complete the project on time and on budget.

The operation maintains only minimal stock and parts. It is designed as a Just in Time (JIT) process overseen by an experienced accounting clerk whose duties include locating hard-to-find parts for older equipment. The Garage also services the Academic Affairs and Facilities Management rental fleets, including cleaning the vehicles after each rental.

Garage hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please direct inquiries to the Garage Supervisor - Mike Jones at 835-5940.

Lube and Oil Shop

Chris Silva - Lube & Oil Shop Mechanic

Chris Silva
Lube & Oil Shop Mechanic

The Lube & Oil Shop Mechanic maintains a single-employee operation under the oversight of the Associate Director of Engineering. The Mechanic provides the Associate Director with reports based on mirrored files that reflect the service history of every tax-supported vehicle on the New Mexico Tech campus.

The Mechanic notifies the respective department/divisions of fleet vehicles scheduled for regular lube maintenance: Every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The Mechanic maintains a supply of oil filters for the variety of vehicles serviced by the shop, and schedules service activities based on the vehicle's maintenance record and frequency of use.

The Mechanic conducts vehicular safety inspections to ensure vehicle is "sound" for regular use; if not, vehicle is referred to the Garage.

Vehicles serviced by the Lube & Oil Shop include rental vehicles, regular campus fleets, vehicles under the umbrella of the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC) and other research divisions, dump trucks used by the Heavy Equipment and CDL Training Center, golf carts, mowers, and other specialized equipment used to maintain the campus grounds and Golf Course.

The shop itself is comprised of a high-ceilinged metal building with four bays and an oil storage capacity equivalent to three, 55-gallon drums. Building is designed for optimizing space and meeting ventilation needs.

Lube & Oil Shop hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The shop is prohibited from servicing privately owned vehicles.
