POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
TITLE SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER DEPT MAGDALENA RIDGE OBSERVATORY
REG þ FULL TIME þ STARTING RATE or SALARY RANGE Negotiable
JOB DUTIES: Analyzes, designs, develops software for a distributed control system, embedded processing, real-time servo systems, high speed detector data acquisition systems, in science and engineering applications, using client/server methodologies and object-oriented programming for the MROI. Develops codes, test, integrates and debugs software for Linux, Real-time Linux, C++, Java, CORBA, client/server protocols, input/output peripheral busses, hardware device interfaces and software device drivers. Researches and troubleshoots complex interactions with software, hardware, and networks. Documents requirements, design, coding, testing, integration and commissioning activities. Provides MRO staff with significant software engineering experience and depth of familiarity with implementation or world-class facility-grade software applications for complex control systems and data acquisitions. Documents and reports on all activities, progress, and technical status. Demonstrates strong capability of independence, effective problem solving, creativity and experienced decision making ability based on developed technical skills with minor supervision and guidance. Other duties as required by the MRO Interferometer Project Manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors degree required in Computer Science or related scientific discipline with at least 5 years design and development experience. Proven ability to design complicated control software required. Proven ability to successfully deliver complex software required. Excellent interpersonal skills to work in a team environment required. Excellent presentational and written communications skills required. Demonstrated ability to interface with and manage external contracts/venders desired. Master’s degree or higher in computer science or related discipline desired. Experience working in a university environment desired. Demonstrated ability with astronomical systems desired. Experience with and use of professional management tools and procedures desired. The application must be living within one-hour commute to the MRO interferometry facility on the ridge. Must have a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Physical ability to work extensive periods at an altitude of 10.500 feet required. Must be able to access ITAR restricted material. With the exception nationals of a few countries worldwide to which the US has restricted export, all MROI staff will be qualified. Must have obtained Bachelor degree at the time of appointment.
