POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Research Associate   Salary Range: $38K - $52K

 

The Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Department, New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology is seeking applicants for a Research Associate to provide technical support to electron and scanning microscopy. The salary for this position is partially funded with soft money which is dependent on SEM service center usage. This is a 12 month position which pays at 75% time base salary including benefits with the ability to receive additional 25% salary through additional microscope usage fees, research, and/or teaching. The main job function is the maintenance, operation, and user training of FESEM plus at least one of TEM, SAM, or AFM. In addition, the person hired will be responsible for the FESEM service center budget plus the service center associated with the additional microscope, develop budget recommendations and new programs/services, assist with budget preparation, and monitor budgets for equipment service centers. MS in Engineering/Science  with preference given to materials majors is minimum requirement; however, a  Ph.D. or other doctorate level equivalent in Materials Engineering or other Engineering/Science is preferred. Applicants are required to have experience operating an SEM with EDS, preparing samples for SEM, and evaluating metals and/or ceramic materials. Applicants must be able to teach users how to operate SEM and prepare samples. They must have knowledge of Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation Software and be able to write reports for customers, Applicants must have knowledge of operation and application of at least one additional electron or scanning microscope (SAM preferred) including appropriate sample preparation. They should also be able to trouble shoot SEM and make minor repairs to SEM. The job is available immediately and will be posted until filled.
