POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

 

TITLE          INFRARED CAMERA SCIENTIST        DEPT        MRO/R&ED

STARTING RATE or SALARY RANGE $53,913. - $67,932.

 

JOB DUTIES:

The successful applicant will be responsible for leading a small team in the design, procurement, installation and testing of various camera assemblies (e.g. dewar's, focal, plane arrays, feed optics and stages, dewar's etc.) associated with the MRO Interferometer effort. These will mainly comprise between 6 and 9 near-infrared fast-readout focal-plane-array cameras with low to moderate spectral resolution. In addition, the successful candidate may also assist in the design and deployment of several optical camera systems including wide-field CCD acquisition cameras, fast-tip tilt CCD cameras for low order adaptive optics, and low-cost alignment system cameras for the automated alignment system of the 10-element interferometer. Conceptual and detailed design of near-infrared fast readout FPA-based camera systems. Lead, participate, and supervise graduate students and technicians, in the assembly and testing of these systems. Deployment and commissioning of these systems at MROI. Documentation of the subsystems and assistance in programming arrays for the custom readouts needed for interferometry. Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager. Publishing results and making presentations at conferences. Assist in preparation of funding proposals associated with the MROI.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Ph.D. (or Master's with equivalent research experience) required in Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline. Three or more years required of hand's-on experience in the following areas: 1.) Concept definition, system design, component procurement and testing of infrared FPA cameras; 2.) Cryogenic and vacuum dewar assemble and testing; 3.) Integration and testing of infrared FPA-based cameras to verify operability in an observatory. Desired qualifications include: experience in one or more of the following areas: 1.) operating/designing/optimizing high-speed low-noise electronics; 2.) optical design tools such as Zemax or Code V; 3.) supervision of external vendor contracts for procured parts (e.g. optics, dewars, electronics); 4.) supervising of assemble technicians or graduate students in a lab setting.
