Assistant/Associate Professor of Physics The Department of Physics at New Mexico Tech invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in astrophysics, to begin in August 2008. Individuals whose research interests will strengthen or complement existing programs in the department are especially encouraged to apply. The department's interests range from planetary atmospheres and star formation, through stellar structure and pulsars, to galactic structure, radio galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory, which runs the Very Large Array and the Very Long Baseline Array, has offices on campus, and we maintain strong connections with NRAO staff and facilities. New Mexico Tech is also actively involved in development of the Magdalena Ridge Observatory in the mountains just west of Socorro; the observatory's 2.4m telescope is operational and the optical/infrared interferometer is scheduled for first fringes in 2009. Further information about the Department may be found at http://www.physics.nmt.edu or by contacting physics@kestrel.nmt.edu.
Physics faculty members are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate physics courses as well as to establish an internationally competitive research program and to involve students in research. A PhD in physics or a related field is required, and some teaching experience is beneficial. Candidates should demonstrate a record of research accomplishments normally achieved through postdoctoral experience and should show potential for professional leadership. Applicants should send printed (not email or fax) copies of a resume, significant reprints, summaries of research plans and teaching philosophy, and contact information for three references to this address: Physics Search, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology/Human Resources, 801 Leroy Place, Box 173 Socorro NM 87801. Review of applications will begin on 15 February 2008 and will continue until the position is filled. The appointment is expected to be made at the Assistant Professor level, but exceptional candidates will be considered for appointment at higher levels. AAEOE |
