POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT TITLE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION DEPT R&ED/ NATIONAL CAVE & KARST RESEARCH INSTITUTE REG þ FULL TIME þ STARTING RATE or SALARY RANGE $51,000-$55,000 JOB DUTIES: The Education Director will focus on performing a variety of administrative, programmatic, supervisory, financial, and educational work to administer the functions of NCKRI’s Education Program, as well as generally supporting NCKRI’s functions. The mission of NCKRI’s Education Program covers cave and karst education at all levels, including K-12, undergraduate to post-doctoral, professional, policy-makers, and the general public. Cave and karst education materials and programs will vary according to the target audience and will include general knowledge and appreciation, multidisciplinary topics such as geology, biology, hydrology, and archeology in karst areas, awareness of unique environmental vulnerabilities in karst, and sound stewardship practices. The Education Director will: (1) Supervise, train, and coordinate staff assigned to the Education Program. (2) Conduct outreach to create partnerships for cave and karst educational programs from international to local levels in the public and private sectors. (3) Develop plans for accurate, timely, and state-of-the-art cave and karst educational activities, including curricula, workshops, seminars, field trips, and lecture series. (4) Create and supervise the creation of educational materials in all media. (5) Coordinate to develop and approve an inventory of sale items appropriate to the educational goals of the Institute. (6) Administer the promotion, use, maintenance, and upgrading of the Institute’s exhibit/museum areas and classrooms. (7) Promote and conduct appropriate outreach, program development, and training of karst educators in cooperation with Institute partners. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A Bachelor’s degree in Education, with a science or environmental emphasis is required; applicants with a Master’s or doctorate degree are desired. Comparable experience in science and/or environmental education may substitute if the degree program lacked that emphasis. 2. Must have at least 5 years experience in conducting and developing educational programs, especially science-oriented; a broad science background is preferred and detailed knowledge of caves and karst is highly desired. 3. Knowledge of formal educational practices and concepts as they relate to classrooms and educational institutions is required. 4. Understanding of current trends and technologies in educational methods and theory, from elementary to graduate and public education, including distance education, and the ability to apply this knowledge to curriculum development and classroom presentation is required. 5. Understanding of international to local educational goals and objectives and ability to apply that knowledge to a wide variety of education districts, institutions, and learning levels is required. 6. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with international to local agencies, educators, and officials in the public and private sector, to develop joint educational programs, is required. 7. Knowledge of interpretive practices, techniques, and concepts related to caves and karst is highly desired. 8. Demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources is highly desired. 9. Experience in teaching and curriculum development is desired. 10. Experience designing and developing various educational, interpretive, and outreach products, such as CD-ROMs, curriculum guides, exhibits, publications, television and video programs, websites and interactive educational games, etc. is desired. 11. Experience in museum interpretation, design, exhibition, and curation is desired. 12.
