Backhoe Training Course

This program was developed to train individuals in the fundamentals of heavy equipment operations. It will provide those with the background, insight, and practice that is necessary in the construction industry.

Backhoe TrainingThis program is open to employees of all public and private agencies with road construction or maintenance responsibilities. The class size is limited to ensure that the student receives the best educational experience possible. The student will have the traditional classroom experience that will prepare them for backhoe operation. We also provide several acres for the student to have hands on road experience.

Course Objectives:

After completing the Backhoe course, the student should be able to operate the equipment safely, efficiently and perform the jobs listed in Student Objectives.

Student Objectives:

  1. Identify backhoe instruments and controls. 
  2. Learn eight safety rules for backhoe operation. 
  3. Demonstrates the ability to perform backhoe:
    • service;
    • start up and shut down;
    • basic maneuver;
    • safe operation;
    •  material handling.
  4. Trench to specified dimensions (width-depth-length)
  5. Load a dump truck with a backhoe bucket.

Course Information:

The class is one week in length and taught by in-house staff instructors at New Mexico Tech's Technical Training Center in Socorro. It is 32 hours of instruction, and costs $700.00.
