Effective
Advising Techniques
The
academic advising relationship can be the single most important factor
in a student’s persistence and success. An effective relationship
can be built by incorporating three important factors into the advisor’s
approach to advising: conceptual, relational,

aspect, the advisor takes into account the student’s decision-making
processes, expectations, goals, and perspectives. The relational
aspect deals with the establishment of rapport, communication skills,
advocacy. The informational aspect refers to appropriate
knowledge: of the student and the policies, procedures and academic content.
