Effective Advising Techniques
The academic advising relationship can be the single most important factor in a student’s persistence and success. An effective relationship can be built by incorporating three important factors into the advisor’s approach to advising: conceptual, relational, and informational. In the conceptual aspect, the advisor takes into account the student’s decision-making processes, expectations, goals, and perspectives. The relational aspect deals with the establishment of rapport, communication skills, advocacy. The informational aspect refers to appropriate knowledge: of the student and the policies, procedures and academic content.

The Advisor’s Role
  •  Helps the student define and develop realistic goals
  •  Assists the student to plan an academic program consistent with abilities and interests
  •  Identifies special needs and makes appropriate referrals
  •  Monitors progress toward educational and career goals
  •  Assists in the overall development of the student

The Advisee’s Role
  •  Gathers all relevant decision-making information
  •  Clarifies personal values and goals
  •  Is knowledgeable about policies, procedures, and requirements
  •  Accepts responsibilities for decisions
  •  Is aware of pertinent schedules, deadlines
