Recruiting & Scheduling of Faculty Candidates
Begin the process early! There are several built-in delays to the process, anyway, so avoid unnecessary delays. You want to be able to offer a position to the best qualified applicant before he/she has committed to another university. The best qualified applicants are likely to have multiple offers.
Here is an example of a schedule for the faculty recruitment process:
Summer |
Chairman selects a recruitment committee of five people. Include 2 people from outside the department on the committee. Agree on a job description. Get approval from Human Resources and Academic Affairs |
Aug.-Sept |
Prepare advertisement for Science or other appropriate journals. Human Resources and Vice President for Academic Affairs approves and submits the advertisement. Send announcements to colleagues, post announcement on appropriate electronic bulletin boards, etc. |
Oct. 1 |
Advertisement appears in journals. |
Nov. 1 |
Deadline for accepting applications. |
Nov. 1-Dec. 1 |
Review applications, make a short list (usually 3 candidates) for interviewing. Submit the short list with documentation to Human Resources and Academic Affairs for approval. Arrange interview times for each of the candidates (see following list for visit/interviews). |
Jan 15-Feb 15 |
Candidate interviews. Be sure to advertise these with posters, notice in SCOPE, announce in class, e-mail to colleagues, etc. |
Feb 15-Mar 1 |
Committee makes selection and submits selection, along with all documentation to Human Resources, Affirmative Action, and then to Academic Affairs. |
Mar. 1-15 |
Academic Affairs makes an offer and R&ED negotiates start-up funds with the candidate. |
Mar. 15 |
Candidate accepts offer and signs contract. |
This schedule can even be moved up by a month to improve chances of getting the best applicants. Be sure to obtain letters of reference (this should be obvious, but there are cases in which this has not been done!) If necessary, call candidate's references to obtain letters and/or for clarification of information in letters.
